John Steege, Business Intelligence Specialist

Imagine the decision makers in your business – the CEO, CFO, COO, you can fill in your own acronym – with the ability to view data from different sectors of the business, all in one place. And more importantly, imagine that they have a tool that helps them organize that information, create ad-hoc reports, instantly convert them into charts and graphs, and even send periodic reports to themselves via email.

A few years ago, these things would have required the assistance of the IT staff, and even small changes to a report might have required a development cycle of days or weeks. But with a suite of business intelligence tools tailored to your business, your decision makers can choose what reports they want to see and how the data is presented, they can interact with it through a dynamic web interface, and they can even create their own ad-hoc reports. The ability to make information more useful is why it’s so exciting to work with the products in Oracle’s Business Intelligence Suite.

The most visible component in the BI suite is Answers, which provides reports and queries to the end user. The fastest way to get started is to use reports that have already been created and saved. But it also enables you to customize those saved reports and create your own. Answers allows you to choose from preconfigured subject areas specific to your business, then pick and choose what information you want to see in a report. And once you have a report with your desired information, Answers provides different ways of viewing it, from bar graphs to pie charts to scatter plots. And all this is presented in a user-friendly web interface available to end users.

The ease of use is continued with intuitive report viewing via the Dashboards product. A dashboard is essentially a portal that combines multiple reports, graphs, news tickers, or other dynamic information that each individual user finds useful on a day-to-day basis. Each end user can customize and save different dashboard pages through a drag and drop web interface, in whatever layout makes the most sense.

Although having a personal dashboard with up-to-date company data is incredibly useful when you’re in your office sitting at your computer, you can’t be expected to stay there all the time. That’s why Oracle Delivers gives you the ability to send alerts through multiple means, including email and mobile devices. With continual monitoring, Delivers will watch for specified business activity, and notify groups of users when the criteria are met. It’s even able to generate and send reports at the time of the alert, so the recipients can see exactly what’s happening.

Answers, Dashboards, and Delivers are some of the innovative products in Oracle’s BI Suite that can help businesses put their data to better use. After being customized and tailored to your company’s needs, these tools can provide your decision makers with exactly the information they want to see, when they want to see it, the way they want to see it.
